What is the Boötes Supervoid?

There's a place in the universe called the 'Great Nothing.' It's a region of space so mind-bogglingly empty that it shouldn't exist. This is the Boötes Void, a supervoid nearly 330 million light-years across. If our Milky Way galaxy were in the center of it, we would have thought we were totally alone in the universe until the 1960s. Where there should be thousands of galaxies, there are only about 60. This short dives into the scale of this cosmic desert and explains why it's such a profound mystery. According to our best models of the universe, there simply hasn't been enough time since the Big Bang for gravity to sweep a region of space this clean. If you're fascinated by the grand, strange structure of our universe, the story of the Boötes Void is a must-see.
