Dalton GA is an interesting railfanning site, because two major main lines of CSX and Norfolk Southern intersect there. All northern rail traffic into and out of Atlanta GA passes over a diamond in this town, where CSX's Western & Atlantic (W&A) and NS's Atlanta North District meet. Hence, this is normally a very busy place. Yet, it was rather slow when I visited Dalton, because CSX and NS had their track inspectors out there. Air temperatures around 100F and track temperatures of 125F (following an account of a CSX track inspector) may have taken their toll on railroad operations. I saw four groups of track inspectors (three from CSX , one NS) and eleven trains, plus two in Cartersville GA in the morning. [© 2016 MBMARS Productions.
