MARCOVALDO

LIDA (a voce bassa ma fremente)
E tu ardisci, ingratamente,
Sguardi alzar frattanto audaci
Sulla sposa!

MARCOVALDO (sommessamente)
Un cieco amore per te nutro...

LIDA (in atto di allontanarsi)
Cessa...taci...

IMELDA (entra accorrendo frettolosamente) Ah! Signora!

LIDA Imelda, ebbene?

IMELDA
Fede al ver non presterai...
Il tuo sposo...

LIDA Parla...

IMELDA Ei viene... E lo segue...

LIDA Ciel... Chi mai...
Chi? Rispondi...

IMELDA Arrigo!

LIDA Egli vive!

MARCOVALDO
(Quel nome' la scuotea!...
Di vivo foco il suo volto rosseggiò!)

LIDA (Vive!... Oh gioia!... Qui fra poco... Qui... fia ver? Lo rivedrò?)

LIDA
(A frenarti, o cor, nel petto
Più potere in me non trovo...
Sì, quei palpiti ch'io provo
Sono i palpiti d'amor!
Ah! se colpa è questo affetto
Che mi parla un solo istante,
A punirla sia bastante
Una vita di dolor.)

MARCOVALDO
(Leggerò nel tuo sembiante
I segreti del tuo cor!)

IMELDA e DONNE
(Par che tregua un breve istante
Le conceda il suo dolor!)

How well you have spoken, dear friends,
I love my homeland, I love it immensely!
But wherever joy spreads her smile,
There is no place for me.
Beneath the ground
Lie my brothers, both my parents,
And... horrendous fate has cut too many Incurable wounds on my heart!...
I am left only with the heritage of sorrow:
The comfort of tears!
(Her eyes fill with tears; the women,to allow her free vent for her sadness, withdraw and group themselves behind her.)
