Torre - Serra da Estrela Portugal - The Ultimate Roads of Europe
Was again there and made a BETTER Video about this amazing place... check out my channel for it!
Before The Start of the Video there was severel hairpincurves witch are sadly missed. Sorry for the bad Quality, but first camera was not so good.
Torre is a monument that marks the highest point of Mainland Portugal, at an elevation of 1,993 m (6,539 ft) above the sea level. It is located in a mountain range named Serra da Estrela, on the border between the municipalities of Seia (in Guarda) and Covilhã (in Castelo Branco). Torre (Serra do Strela) is the second most elevated point of the country (only Mount Pico, in the Azores, is higher).
Don’t forget your camera! In summer or winter, mainland Portugal’s highest mountain is the perfect scenery for a few relaxing days in contact with nature. Serra da Estrela is an area of rare landscape beauty, with striking mountain drops, where you can have a deep experience of the silence of the heights.
The experience of using this road is very impressive. Near Torre, there are a restaurant, stores with typical products of this region, like the Serra da Estrela cheese, and a ski center called Vodafone Ski Resort, situated in the municipality of Seia. However, the nearest urban area of this place is the city of Covilhã, 20 km (12 mi) away, and the nearest accommodations are situated in the village of Penhas da Saúde, 10 minutes away.
The road includes some steep sections. The surface of the road is asphalted, and chains or snow tyres can be required throughout the year. Torre has an unusual feature of being a summit that is accessible by paved road, the Regional Road 339 (R 339), formerly National Road 339 (N 339). This stretch of road should not be attempted by novice drivers.. The Serra da Estrela region is located in the North-Eastern part Portugal, with a distance of 300 Km of Lisbon, 200 Km of Porto and 400Km of Madrid.
