Jimmy Zhong
There were two sides of Jimmy Zhong.
He was the friend that treated the people around him to expensive trips, and the party boy who entered a bar and bought everyone a shot. The parties at his lake house were legendary, and, even though he didn’t have an obvious source of income, he was always flaunting his wealth. Zhong told people he got rich from the early days of crypto, but that wasn’t the full story.

Martinelli Investigations
Martinelli owned her own firm, Martinelli Investigations, where she usually handled cases like cheating spouses and custody disputes. She was no expert in the crypto field and it was one of her first times handling a case of this nature. But Zhong needed her help, so she took the job.

Buying Friends
Zhong refused to believe that anyone in his inner circle would steal from him, but it was no secret that being his friend came with some serious perks. He liked to treat people around him and was known to enter a bar and buy a round of drinks for everyone inside. The University of Georgia alum lived in a modest house near campus, but he liked to make big purchases.

Whale Orbiters
For years Zhong struggled to make friends, but, by this point, he had money, and that made it easier. Martinelli believed his friendships were one-sided, with Zhong investing money and time into his inner circle, only for his supposed ‘friends’ to take advantage of him.

2012 Silk Road Hack
Seven years before Zhong’s 911 call, someone had stolen 50,000 bitcoins from The Silk Road, a site on the dark web. As one of the first crypto marketplaces, The Silk Road was basically eBay, but for illegal stuff.
