Rosewood furniture with mother-of-pearl inlay #beijing #museum

Dianqi (mother-of-pearl inlay) is a technique that uses shells (such as mother-of-pearl, abalone shell, etc.) inlaid into lacquerware or wooden objects, utilizing their iridescent luster to create a splendid decorative effect. It originated in China during the Western Zhou period, matured in the Tang and Song dynasties, and reached its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties. After being introduced to the Korean Peninsula in the 8th century, it developed into an even more refined form known as thin mother-of-pearl inlay (soft mother-of-pearl inlay), which is more delicate and elegant than Chinese dianqi, with a greater emphasis on the natural iridescent effect of the shells themselves.
