How Language, Football & Identity Shape a Community | Community Exploration Canada – EP1 | World Cup
FC Bayern’s Community Exploration journeys into immigrant and diaspora communities across North America connected by football, heritage, and belonging. Guided by the club’s players, we trace how football connects to language, heritage, and the places people call home.
In this episode, the journey begins in Montreal, a city shaped by French language, Haitian culture, and communities built across generations. Through Didier NuBorn and Rito Joseph, two Haitian immigrants living in Canada, the episode explores how language can become a bridge between people from different countries and backgrounds. French connects communities across Haiti, Canada, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean, creating a shared sense of familiarity far from home.
For Didier, FC Bayern has been part of that story since childhood. What began as choosing a team while playing with friends became a deeper connection to the club, especially through the meaning of “Mia San Mia.” As a Haitian growing up in Canada, the phrase reflected the freedom to be who he is and to carry his identity with pride. His connection to players like Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano, and Michael Olise also speaks to the power of representation in football.
Rito’s story brings another layer through history, education, and community. Inspired by his father’s stories about Haiti and Black history, he has dedicated much of his work to sharing histories and voices that have not always been fully represented. Together, Didier and Rito show how football, language, music, food, and memory can bring people together, especially as both Haiti and Canada prepare to appear on the world stage.
