It takes a few centuries for flowing water to transform a jagged chunk of stone into a smooth river rock, but Subaru has done just that to its once-boxy Forester in just a quarter of a century. That’s the timeline between the debut of the first generation of the automaker’s compact SUV in 1997; and today, when Subaru revealed to the world the all-new sixth-generation 2025 Subaru Forester at the 2023 L.A. Auto Show.

Over 200,000 Foresters have been sold in Canada, and for the past 25 years, one out of every four Subarus sold was a Forester.

While still having some of the visual DNA of the outgoing rugged model — notably the redesigned front grille and front, side, and rear underguards — the new iteration is a marked departure from the square-edged cabin we’ve come to recognize as the Forester. This new sleeker design falls in line with much of the competition in this crowded category, but the Forester still stands out as an off-road-friendly vehicle with a 22-centimetre ground clearance and, of course, Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive.
