As many as 25 000 National Guard troops are expected on the streets of Washington DC to ensure the inauguration of incoming US President Joe Biden passes without problems. The city is braced for a potential extremist attack like the violence seen on January 6th when pro-Trump rioters broke into the Capitol building. FBI intelligence suggests more armed protests are planned. The mayor of DC has ordered a state of emergency and says the city is undergoing "an unprecedented level of preparation".
