First SWEET POTATO Harvest 2020 / Voles ATTACK | Sweet Potatoes for WINTER | Zone 5 Urban Homestead
First SWEET POTATO Harvest 2020 // Voles ATTACK | Prepping Enough Sweet Potatoes for WINTER? | Wisconsin Zone 5 Tiny Urban Homestead
At long last! After four months of waiting and watering and waiting, we are ready to begin harvesting our 2020 sweet potatoes.
In this video, we harvest one of the 3’x6’ cedar raised beds. These beds contain three types of sweet potatoes Japanese (red), Hannah (pale), and Garnet (orange).
These are not the most mature of our sweet potatoes, but the voles have come to town and are eating some of the surface sweet potatoes, so we need to get them out of the ground now before any more damage occurs.
We are excited about the variety of sweet potato types we are growing this year because that will enable us to see which perform the best in our soil.
The soil in these raised beds comes, in part, from the potting soil mix we have shown in another video.
One of the nice things about our crop this year is that they were not overly pressured by Japanese Beetles, and we had no splitting occur in these varieties.
One thing to consider during harvesting is just how gentle you have to be when pulling them out of the ground otherwise the skin will get scratched and the storage life will decrease greatly.
We are going to let these cure (if we don’t eat them all first) for a few weeks before storing them away.
Enjoy our first sweet potato harvest!
Summary
In this video you will:
1) See some of the benefits of planting sweet potatoes in a raised bed.
2) See a bountiful sweet potato harvest in a bed that is only 18 square feet.
3) See the difference in yield for us between the Japanese Sweet Potato, Hannah Sweet Potato, and Garnet sweet potato varieties.
4) See the benefit of planting in multiple locations with multiple varieties.
5) Be inspired to plant your own sweet potatoes next season!
