An Ametrine Adventure - Meeting Presentation by George R. Rossman

This video is a recording of the Fallbrook Gem and Mineral Society's membership meeting that occurred on June 17th, 2021

In Dr. Rossman’s presentation, we will hear of one such study of ametrine, a colored gem-variety of the mineral quartz that began with rumors of misrepresentation and undisclosed treatment.
Rumors led to a damaged industry. To get at the facts, it was necessary to make trips to gem mines in Brazil and remote eastern Bolivia as well as a trip to Russia to a laboratory where the process to synthesize gem ametrine was developed.
Is ametrine a totally natural gem?

George R. Rossman is Professor of Mineralogy in the Division of Geological and Planetary
Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California. He got his B.S. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Wisconsin State University, Eau Claire,
and his Ph.D. from Caltech in Chemistry. His principal research interests deal with the use spectroscopic probes to study mineral
