GitHub Copilot Agent Mode - Workspace | Basic Tip #githubcopilot
One *very* important concept when using GitHub Copilot in **Agent Mode** that took me way too long to fully click: **the workspace**.
Copilot doesn’t have magical access to your entire machine. It only works inside the **sandboxed workspace** you launch it from. Anything outside that boundary? Completely invisible to the agent.
This becomes especially painful when:
* You open one solution in Visual Studio
* Try to rewrite or duplicate it elsewhere
* And Copilot suddenly “can’t” create or modify files you *know* exist
The fix is simple but easy to miss:
Both the **old and new solutions must live under the same parent folder**, and Copilot must be started from that parent workspace.
I also ran into cases where Copilot ignored subfolders *inside* the workspace, leading to confusing false-error messages and wasted prompts.
**Pro tip:**
When things feel off, always ask Copilot:
* What is the current workspace?
* Can you access the folder I want to modify?
It’ll save you a lot of head-scratching.
