Hidden History of the First Ladies

he role is unpaid and undefined, yet many women serving as the first lady have made pivotal contributions to help shape the United States. Hear these stories in a Tuesday Explorers presentation by A Tour of Her Own, the first tourism company in Washington, D.C., to focus exclusively on women’s history.

Our virtual tour will offer a glimpse of the Willard Hotel, where Grace Coolidge and Florence Harding lived. See the exterior of first lady Dolley Madison’s residence, nicknamed the “second White House." And hear how Jacqueline Kennedy preserved Lafayette Square from destruction.

The stories offer a unique perspective on American history and a sense of the personal struggles many of these women faced, from breast cancer to media scrutiny and unfaithful husbands.

A Tour of Her Own Tour Guide Meghan Hanson presented this program. She is a public historian who graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Anthropology focusing on Museum Studies and Art History. She serves on the board of the Guild Of Professional Tour Guides and delivers a variety of tours that focus on themes involving labor movements and economy, First Ladies, art, and the Gilded Age.
