O'Carolan Harp Festival, Ireland 1982

Musicians gather in Keadue County Roscommon for the O’Carolan Harp Festival.

The streets of Keadue have been busy this weekend with open air harp concerts and traditional music sessions in the sunshine.

The week-long O’Carolan Harp Festival is held to honour the memory of famed harper and composer Turlough O’Carolan (1670 – 1738) who is buried in Kilronan Cemetery just outside the village.

In addition to harp competitions for children and adults there will be a variety of traditional music performances and concerts, as well as music workshops, céilís, a handcrafts exhibition, and a children’s fancy dress parade.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 4 August 1982. The reporter is Mícheál Ó hUanacháin.
