Donald Trump waves at migrants across Rio Grande during US-Mexico border visit

Former U.S. President Donald Trump waved to people standing on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande on Thursday (February 29) as he visited the U.S.-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas with Governor Greg Abbott.

"They like Trump. Can you believe it?" Trump said to a pool camera crew after a voice could be heard shouting his name from across the river.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Trump made dueling visits to the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday as an influx of immigrants has become a dominant issue for voters.

Trump, who looks set to face Biden in what polls predict will be a close election on Nov.5, was briefed by officials with Abbott at the Rio Grande before speaking at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, flanked by officials.

"The United States is being overrun by the Biden migrant crime. It's a new form of a vicious violation to our country," Trump said, in an example of the increasingly inflammatory language he has used to describe the border issue and slam his rival's policies.

Eagle Pass remains a flashpoint in a heated partisan debate over border security even though the number of migrants caught crossing illegally into both there and Brownsville dropped sharply in January and February.

The number of migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally hit a monthly record of 250,000 in December but dropped by half in January, a trend U.S. officials attribute to increased Mexican enforcement and seasonal trends.
