Film Scoring in Ableton | Pros & Cons

PROS OF USING ABLETON FOR FILM SCORING: Ableton’s audio processing algorithms are superior to other DAWs. It is also like creating in a more 3D playful environment so I feel more inspired to push possibilities and try things than in other DAWs I’ve worked in. This is not in any way tribal or trashing other DAWs - I think Logic and Cubase are great and Pro Tools is the best focused mixing environment for sure - I’ve just always really responded well to Ableton. I also think the native plugins are vastly underutilized and Max is a game changer in so many ways (will save these topics for a future video).

CONS OF USING ABLETON FOR FILM SCORING: Ableton doesn’t handle video playback as well as Logic or Pro Tools but I think this is far overblown if you read some of the comments on Reddit threads and forums on this issue. I think anyone working on a larger production with constant picture changes will find Ableton’s workflow to picture too difficult to deal with. With that being said, if you don’t have to constantly create new time code and understand basic best practices for subtle timing changes in Ableton (like don’t make your changes to your cue from the middle outward for example) it’s not as huge a drop off as people say.

Ableton for film scoring has come a long ways since I started using it. Post houses used to hate that I was an Ableton guy. Now many I interface with have said they love it and also use it for their creative work.

If you have any questions or want more information on this topic, drop em in the comments and I’ll respond as best I can.
