Flora Nevarez, violin

"Tar Hollow" is a solo violin piece which draws inspiration from Appalachian folk music. The tune is sweet, singable, and freely played. Its motivic ideas are simple and fanciful. It uses common fiddle techniques such as double stops, ornaments, and small glissando into key pitches. The work is named for Tar Hollow in Laurelville, Ohio. Though I spent little time there as a child, the experiences I had there and shared with important people in my life left a lasting impression. This piece is for the peaceful moments—the bright sun filtering through the foliage, the mist on the lake in the early morning, the sounds of the birds and crickets, and the soft crunch of grass and pebbles under my shoes.
