Today we're going to hit the traffic pattern with a flying lesson, do some takeoffs and landings, and I'll be your Flight instructor (CFI) for the day. Our flight school Cessna 172 is a great little airplane. Great way to commit aviation.

Initially we do a normal takeoff from the runway. Very simple, keeping aligned with centerline, and flying off the runway when we get to the correct airspeed. We track centerline and climb on the way out.

Next we do a normal landing after the initial traffic pattern (where we did the requisite CGUMPS checklist). This approach and landing are stabilized and precise.

Now we do a soft field takeoff. We're trying to keep our nosewheel from hitting a rut, digging in, and hitting our prop. Of course this is not a REAL soft field. But we hold the nosewheel off as we takeoff. Eventually we lift off and then accelerate in ground effect.

Another successful traffic pattern, and now we fly the airplane down to a soft field landing. We land as softly as we can, by keeping a little power in, and keeping pressure off of the nosewheel. Certainly takes some more active flying to make this work well. Aviation done right!

Next is a short field takeoff. This means we have a short distance for takeoff, and maybe even need to climb over an obstacle. We're at a full stop, we hold the brakes, full power, check that we're producing full power, and we lift off as soon as we can, and climb out at Vx. Once over the obstacle, we change the attitude and fly the plane to Vy. Precise flying makes it work best.

Lots of little tips about the traffic pattern along the way.

Now we do a short field landing, where we're trying to stop in a short distance. Rarely do you need to stop that quickly, but these are still techniques you're expected to know as a private pilot.

Next we do a normal takeoff again. No big deal. Just doing the aviation thing!

But now we'll do a power off 180º approach with an accuracy landing. This is a commercial level maneuver, but we're constantly looking at our touchdown point and using a combination of distance, altitude, flaps, speed, etc.

Last landing is a fun one, landing on some gravel. Kinda fun and different, and a much smaller target than all the other landings. This just goes to show that those skills built can pay off on the real thing.
