How I Wash My Japanese Makeup Brushes

READ ME

I DID forget to mention something: CLEAN YOUR HANDLES AND FERRULES. Wipe them down with a soft, damp cloth to remove makeup residue and other stuff.

You'll want to leave your brushes to dry in a place with good ventilation that does not regularly get humid. So if you have a very small bathroom, don't dry leave them to dry in there. The temperature + humidity changes may wreck havoc on the brush head AND the wood handle.

General rule for picking a soap: if the soap makes your eyes sting, don't use it to wash your brushes. That being said, I once used the Blender Solid Cleanser which I mentioned in the video to wash my face out of curiosity. Never again. It washes my brushes great through.

I've tried the following official brushes cleansers because it came as a gift with purchase or in a set: the Hakuhodo Clear Soap and the Blender Solid (x2). They worked great, but I didn't repurchase them because I didn't find them to be THAT phenomenal, so I turned to using soaps that I make for face and body. I give the ones that are pretty away as gifts (because everyone can use soap!) and keep the wonky ones for my own use.

Your Questions Answered:
Q: What temperature water should I use?
A: Warm water is ideal, but as long as it's not scalding or cold, you're fine. I use the hot water side. Because I keep turning the faucet on then of almost right away, rather than keeping it on in a continuous stream, the water only gets to lukewarm at most.

Q: So I can use any face cleanser for washing brushes?
A: I would say yes if it is a basic face wash doesn't have any additional benefits (like exfoliating) and is not super stripping, or has a very high pH like African black soap. Actives like lactic/glycolic/mandelic/fruit acid in your face wash should be avoided. Same applies if your face wash has physical bits in it.

Q: A WEEK!?!
A: Yes. Up to a week. Eye brushes should be good to go in 2-4 days. If a brush is very dense, give it a full week. Imagine this: you go swimming with your hair in a ponytail. 1-2 hour after leaving the water, your hair is dry... or so you think until you remove the hair-tie. All that hair that was compressed in the hair-tie is still wet even though the ends of your hair felt dry! The ferrule on brushes is like a hair tie.
With some of my foundation or kabuki brushes, it can take upwards of 48 hours before all the hair feels dry even after I towel dry it. Keep in mind: this is just the hair extending out of the ferrule that I can feel. The bristles, tightly packed into the ferrule are probably not completely dry yet. Better to be patient and safe, rather than potentially ruin an expensive investment, by waiting 200% more time (96-110 hours, 4-5 more days ).

Q: Do I have to dry my brushes upside down?
A: No, but it is supposed that gravity will provide minor assist in the evacuation of moisture to the hair tips. You can dry your brushes laying them down on their side with the entire brush head (the hair part) hanging over the edge so they don't acquire a weird shape when they're dried. Just be careful not to walk to close past them and knock them all to the floor... not speaking from experience or anything....
