When Kieran Read stepped up as a captain, he had lots of new responsibilities added to his plate. But even as his responsibilities grew, Kieran doubled down on connecting with his teammates:

“I had to be proactive at building those connections.”

Connecting effectively is about more than being proactive, though. Who’s responsible for building that connection matters too.

“It's not up to the new guy who comes into the team to come up to me as the captain and share his story. It's up to me to go to that person and find a connection point.”

You may think of yourself as, well, just you. But, as a leader, you have power and status — and that means new recruits may feel shy about introducing themselves to you.

And that’s why connection has to be the leader’s responsibility.
