FAQ

What’s royalty-free music?

This term seems to stir a lot of confusion, especially online. No one in the music industry likes the term, but it seems to be sticking for now.
Royalty-free music isn’t free music, and never was. Royalty-free means exactly what the term says - it’s music free of royalties. You don’t have to pay the creator every time a song is used as it was the case traditionally with with rights-managed music - so-called needle-drop licensing, where royalties had to be paid every time the needle “dropped” and therefore every single time it was used. The royalties also depended on the size of the territory and the amount of viewers.
With royalty free music you pay a license fee to the creator once and are allowed to use the track forever in the video you purchased the license for.

This doesn’t mean it’s free of performance royalties though. They are paid to the composer when music is performed publicly: TV broadcasts etc.
BUT: They are not paid by the video creator/purchaser of a license. The networks or venues broadcasting your video/film/show, advertisement etc. have to pay them to the Performing Rights Organisations (PRO) like BMI, ASCAP, PRS and their global equivalents, and they pay the composers.
In case of YouTube for example, YouTube is the broadcaster and pays performance royalties to the PRO’s.
Can’t I just give you credit, use your music for free and still monetize my videos?

No, unfortunately you can’t.
According to international law, giving credit does not protect you from copyright infringement. You need a license to show YouTube and Google that you have the necessary rights to use the music in your productions. Otherwise your videos cannot be monetized.
