Anwar lives a middle-class lifestyle in Lucknow, India, with his mother and sister Suraiya. Anwar is researching ancient Hindu Temples. The family rents out a room to a poor widow and her attractive daughter, Mehru, whom Anwar falls in love with.

Anwar is certain of Mehru's love for him, but Mehru has her heart set on settling in America. She is tired of the dust, the summer heat, and the struggles and tragedy of her poverty-stricken country. Anwar tells Mehru it is not possible for him to take her to the U.S. Even if he works all day, it is impossible and out of his reach. Mehru expresses her interest in Udit, an engineer that has plans to settle in America. Mehru begins a relationship with Udit, which one day is revealed to Anwar. One day Anwar visits Udit who tells him of his plan to marry Mehru before going to the USA as his visa is ready. Anwar tells him that he should think once again before doing this because of the differences in religion, as Mehru is a follower of Islam and Udit is a follower of Hinduism. If Mehru's strict and conservative family members come to know about this, they will shatter the dreams of Mehru and Udit and even their life will not be spared. Seeing that Udit has ignored his warning, Anwar confesses his feelings to Mehru when they meet on the terrace and he begs her not to leave him. He cannot imagine his life without her,

अनवर अपनी माँ और बहन सुरैया के साथ लखनऊ, भारत में एक मध्यमवर्गीय जीवन शैली जीते हैं। अनवर प्राचीन हिंदू मंदिरों पर शोध कर रहे हैं। परिवार एक गरीब विधवा और उसकी आकर्षक बेटी मेहरू को एक कमरा किराए पर देता है, जिससे अनवर को प्यार हो जाता है।

अनवर को मेहरू के प्यार के बारे में यकीन है, लेकिन मेहरू का दिल अमेरिका में बसने का है। वह धूल, गर्मी और गरीबी से त्रस्त अपने देश के संघर्षों और त्रासदी से थक गई है। अनवर मेहरू से कहता है कि उसके लिए उसे अमेरिका ले जाना संभव नहीं है। भले ही वह पूरे दिन काम करे, लेकिन यह असंभव है और उसकी पहुंच से बाहर है। मेहरू एक इंजीनियर उदित में अपनी रुचि व्यक्त करती है, जो अमेरिका में बसने की योजना बना रहा है। मेहरू का उदित के साथ रिश्ता शुरू होता है, जिसका खुलासा एक दिन अनवर को हो जाता है। एक दिन अनवर उदित से मिलने जाता है जो उसे यूएसए जाने से पहले मेहरू से शादी करने की अपनी योजना के बारे में बताता है क्योंकि उसका वीजा तैयार है। अनवर उससे कहता है कि धर्म में मतभेद के कारण उसे ऐसा करने से पहले एक बार फिर सोचना चाहिए, क्योंकि मेहरू इस्लाम का अनुयायी है और उदित हिंदू धर्म का अनुयायी है। अगर मेहरू के सख्त और रूढ़िवादी परिवार वालों को इस बात का पता चला तो वे मेहरू और उदित के सपनों को चकनाचूर कर देंगे और यहां तक ​​कि उनकी जान भी नहीं बख्शी जाएगी. यह देखकर कि उदित ने उसकी चेतावनी को नजरअंदाज कर दिया है, जब वे छत पर मिलते हैं तो अनवर मेहरू के सामने अपनी भावनाओं को कबूल करता है और वह उससे उसे न छोड़ने की विनती करता है। वह उसके बिना अपने जीवन की कल्पना भी नहीं कर सकता, लेकिन मेहरू का कहना है कि उसने अनवर से कभी प्यार नहीं किया।
