This video shows three Lego trains on one track with automated railroad crossings. This is a test setup.
Trains:
7939 Cargo Train
60051 High-Speed Passenger Train
60052 Cargo Train
The track is divided into different sections. Each section has its own Arduino which identifies the trains by RFID. A central Arduino Mega is used to controll the trains. Communication between Arduino's and the Arduino Mega is done with the NFR24l1.
