At just 26 years of age, Flying Officer Nirmaljeet Singh Sekhon stood alone in the skies over Srinagar and took on overwhelming enemy forces to defend the airbase. His bravery on 14 December 1971 remains one of the Indian Air Force’s greatest acts of valour, earning him the Param Vir Chakra—the first and, to this day, the only one awarded to an IAF officer.

His sacrifice came during the 1971 India–Pakistan War, the same conflict that forms the backdrop of the upcoming war film Border 2, featuring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahaan Shetty. As millions of refugees fled East Pakistan into India, the humanitarian crisis pushed the nation to act. India supported the Mukti Bahini and later intervened militarily, leading to the liberation of Bangladesh.
