Hyundai Elantra N: The Best Value "Hot Hatch"

Let’s test drive and review the 2025 Hyundai Elantra N! And thanks @homefieldapparel for sponsoring this video!

The Elantra N has a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that actually came from the old Veloster N. It makes 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. All of that power to the front wheels goes through either a 6-speed manual as standard or an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic as a $1,500 upgrade.

Hyundai is promoting the auto right now, so our only option in the press fleet was the auto — but in this video, we’ll talk about how the automatic drives, how the manual drives, Hyundai Elantra N vs. Honda Civic Type R, and how the Elantra N drives on track at Sonoma Raceway (i.e. hard acceleration, braking, and speed runs)!

The Elantra N debuted for the 2022 model year as a competitor to hot hatches like the far older and more mature Honda Civic Type R. That means this is the first generation of the Elantra N, compared to six generations of the Civic Type R.

Something the current Elantra N has OVER the more established hot-hatch market is its price, and this is a huge sticking point for a lot of people. The Elantra N starts at $34,000 in America, while its competitors, like the $46,000 Type R, have ballooned.

(And I know you’re all thinking: “Alanis, you can’t call the Elantra N a hot hatch! It’s a sedan!” I get it, but also, “hot hatch” is the name of the market segment it competes in. That’s the easiest way to refer to it.)

Hyundai launched its “N” performance brand in 2012, and the N name stands for two things: the Namyang district in South Korea, the place in the world where the brand was created, and the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany, where automakers test their performance cars year-in and year-out. The “N” logo is also meant to look like a track chicane.

“N” is Hyundai’s performance nameplate, like “Type R” Hondas or “M” BMWs. It also has a mid-tier performance edition the N-Line.

The Hyundai Elantra N isn’t a perfect hot hatch, but it’s a great young hot hatch. Hyundai hasn’t had 30 years to perfect every little thing like Honda has with the Civic Type R, and that makes it feel more like a hot hatch with an attitude than one that’s been crafted into a precision tool over the years.

The Elantra N is sassy. It’s enjoyable. And if it stays on the market half as long as other hot hatches have, we’re in for many more years of fun. I can’t wait.

Thanks for watching my YouTube channel. Enjoy the drive (and the video)!
