‘I was seriously ill, I was suicidal’: Christine Holgate breaks her silence

Former Australia Post Chief Executive Christine Holgate has told a Senate inquiry, at the height of the Cartier watch scandal she was prescribed temazepam and admitted to being “seriously ill” and “suicidal”.

Ms Holgate told the Senate inquiry into the Cartier watch scandal and her exit from Australia Post, that during the height of the saga after she had left the organisation she was “going through hell”.

The former CEO said she tried to make contact with senior government ministers, and was promised a sit down meeting with Communications Minister Paul Fletcher after initially contacting Finance Minister Simon Birmingham.

“I spoke to Minister Birmingham after I sent him that email; he suggested I forward that email to Minister Fletcher and he offered to organise a meeting to help me get resolution,” Ms Holgate said.

“I think if you read that note and I apologise in advance, that it is rambling and it is rambling because I was seriously ill, I was on temazepam. I was suicidal.

“I'm going to be very honest with you. I was in a state of absolute distress.”
