WATCH: 8th grader asks Pence, Harris: If politicians can't get along, how can we?

For the final question of Wednesday's vice presidential debate Oct. 7, moderator Susan Page of USA Today turned to a question sent in from an eighth grader in Utah, who asked: "If our leaders can't get along, how are the citizens supposed to get along?"

Vice President Mike Pence cited the relationship between the late Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia, who approached decisions from different sides of the political spectrum but were close, personal friends. He said "the American people love a good debate, but will always come together in times of need."

Sen. Kamala Harris said the kind of "hate, and division" seen in Charlottesville in 2017 was what propelled former Vice President Joe Biden to run for president. She added "we fight for each person's voice through their vote."

Pence and Harris faced off in their first and only debate this election on Oct. 7 in Salt Lake City. The debate came amid heightened concerns over the coronavirus following Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis.
