Resilience in Trainee Counsellors: Investigating the Role of Age, Gender, and Educational Hiatus

Have you ever wondered what makes a trainee counsellor truly resilient?
Is it age? Gender? A break from education to "find yourself"? With counselling training known for its emotional demands, resilience is seen as essential, but do we really know what shapes it?
This study explored whether age, gender, or educational hiatus could predict levels of resilience in trainee counsellors. Resilience was measured using the Brief Resilience Scale and data were gathered through an online questionnaire. Participants were 47 trainee counsellors enrolled on counselling courses in the UK. Quantitative analysis was carried out using correlations and ANOVA to identify patterns between demographic factors and resilience scores.
While you might expect certain groups to have an advantage, the findings were not so straightforward. No single factor held the key and the patterns we expected did not emerge.
This research offers an opportunity to rethink how we view resilience, not as something predetermined but as something that may be shaped and supported during training.

Er y gallech ddisgwyl i rai grwpiau gael mantais, nid oedd y canfyddiadau mor syml â hynny. Ni ddaeth un ffactor penodol i'r amlwg fel allwedd, ac ni welwyd y patrymau yr oeddem yn eu rhagweld. Mae’r ymchwil hwn yn cynnig cyfle i ailystyried sut rydyn ni’n gweld gwydnwch – nid fel rhywbeth sydd wedi’i bennu ymlaen llaw, ond fel rhywbeth y gellir ei lunio a’i gefnogi yn ystod hyfforddiant.Ymunwch â mi i archwilio beth sy’n dylanwadu’n wirioneddol ar wydnwch mewn cwnselwyr y dyfodol – a sut y gall rhaglenni hyfforddi wneud mwy i’w gryfhau.
