James Stewart was once considered the fastest man on the planet, but he was also one of the most curious and interesting characters our sport has ever seen.
He reached incredible amounts of success on the race track which he will always be remembered for, such as sitting second on the all-time AMA Supercross winners list while also going undefeated in the 2008 Pro Motocross championship, and that’s not to mention his two premier class supercross titles.
Stewart also experienced some fierce rivalries throughout his career, and raced the best riders from different era’s of supercross and motocross, including Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto to name a few.
And while his on-track successes ultimately made him the star he is, it was actually some his endeavours off the track - some good, some bad - that put him in a league of his own in the sport.
So what exactly were those off-track endeavours that defined James Stewart as such an interesting character in motocross and supercross? Let me explain...
