Three provinces have joined Alberta’s push to reform federal judicial appointments. In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Quebec Premier François Legault, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith urge Ottawa to give provinces a role in filling judge vacancies within their jurisdictions. They say decisions would better reflect regional needs and call for a collaborative and transparent appointment process, with provinces granted access to information on assessed candidates. Smith warned she could withhold funding for new judicial positions if Ottawa does not concede changes and urged relaxing the bilingual requirement. The premiers want appointments to superior trial courts and courts of appeal to come from provincially recommended candidates, with information shared across levels. Smith proposed an advisory committee to vet Alberta candidates, recommending to the justice minister; for the Supreme Court, suggestions would go to Carney. Amery argued provinces must gain control.
