How to remove invading grass varieties from your lawn
You may have noticed a grass in your lawn that doesn’t belong and it’s slowly starting to spread. Different grasses require different methods of removal and some are easier than others.
In this video we explain the common scenarios that occur with invading grass species and how to eliminate them from your lawn.
Kikuyu and couch are the number one suspects when it comes to lawn invasion, they are fast growing and have fine seeds that can spread very easily. Kikuyu is more aggressive in nature than any other lawn variety so it’s potential to take over is very high. It spreads by both runners and by seed. Both varieties can be difficult to remove as there are no herbicides that will safely remove them without harming your existing grass.
Invasion can occur a number of different ways:
• Not spraying out your soil base with glyphosate (round up) prior to the installation of a new lawn. This can allow the existing weeds to re-emerge up through your new turf.
• Grass seeds that have travelled to your lawn by the wind, on pets, in bird droppings, on clothing or shoes, or from a neighbouring lawn.
Some lawns, like DNA Certified Sir Walter, have a growth habit that will usually crowd out most weeds and unwanted grasses. But occasionally these undesirables will invade, especially if your lawn hasn’t been well maintained.
Pull it out by hand
If the invading area is only small the most effective way to remove an unwanted grass variety is to pull it out carefully by hand. You can chip them out with a mattock or a garden spade.
Spray with a non-selective herbicide
The only other way to remove kikuyu or couch from a buffalo, fescue, rye or bluegrass lawn is through the application of glyphosate (Round Up).
By using a small paint brush or weed wand carefully brush the leaves of the invading grass. Please be aware that glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide and be careful to only touch the invading turf variety and not your lawn, as it will die also if it comes into contact with the herbicide.
Kikuyu in couch
For a couch lawn that is suffering from an invasion of kikuyu, there are some selective herbicide options that will kikuyu but not the couch. There is a commercially available herbicide called Monument, which is used to eradicate Kikuyu from couch.
*Monument can only be applied on a home lawn by someone who commercially licensed and accredited to do so.
Rye grass in couch
If you have over sown a couch lawn with rye for the winter, you can also spray it out with Monument, Tribute or Destiny herbicides that are safe on couch and target cool-season grasses from warm-season grasses.
Buffalo in other turf varieties
Buffalo grasses require specific broadleaf herbicides for weed control. It is for this reason that an invading buffalo will likely be susceptible to common broadleaf herbicides that contain Dicamba. These herbicides are safe on kikuyu, couch and zoysia, but not buffalo.
A strong, thick and healthy lawn will be less susceptible to an invading grass species, so a good lawn care routine is key to keeping your lawn pure.
