Benny Moré & Ismael Rivera: El Sonero Mayor

Who called Maelo "El Sonero Mayor?" A conversation w/ the masters conducted by writer/musician Aurora Flores at Boys & Girls Harbor, Nov. 2008 w/ Chocolate Armenteros, musician cousin of Benny Moré & Sammy Ayala, original member of Cortijo y Su Combo & compadre of Ismael Rivera. This so called controversy circles around an interview Maelo gave to a Dj in P.R. where he attributes the promotional moniker to Maceda, a promoter for the Bronx Casino who was also the agent of Benny Moré during the time that El Barbaro del Ritmo toured P.R. & performed in the Palladium in NY. Remembering the passing remark that Benny made to describe Maelo's singing as a youngster, Macedo pulled out the phrase "Sonero Mayor" to begin promoting Ismael who, although called "El Brujo de Borinquen" as well as "Sonero Mayor" was always, prior to his solo career billed alongside his mentor as "Cortijo y Su Combo con Ismael Rivera."
