Saratov is a major port city on the River Volga and is located on the right bank of the Volgograd Reservoir of the Volga River , 389 km from Volgograd and 442 km from Samara...
The original settlement was founded around the 1590s as a guard fortress for the protection of the southern borders of the Russian state, during the reign of Fyodor Ioannovich, Tsar of all Russia and Grand Duke of Moscow. and was on the site of e medieval Golden Horde settlement.
By the second half of the 18th century, the town had become a major trade centre of fish and salt and from the 19th century one of the main centres of the grain trade. Saratov gained provincial city status in 1780. By 1900, the city was the largest on the Volga River by population and had an established university in 1909...
Rapid development of the city occured during the Great Patriotic War , when a number of factories and military schools were evacuated from the west of the USSR. Until 1990, Saratov was a closed city , as several large enterprises of the defence industry worked in the city, in particular, the Saratov Aircraft Plant , which produced military and civil aircraft.
