You see that house over there, up on the hill--shrouded in a strange mist, even though it’s the middle of the day--and wait--oh no, what’s that? A strange shadowy figure lingering in the attic window. Oh no! It’s a haunted house. And strangely enough--there seems to be a hell of a lot of them over in this terrifying landscape that we call horror cinema. You see, the thing is--the convention of the haunted house is steeped in gothic horror history, from Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables--horror has been obsessed with the things that linger in old, haunted manors. And as you may imagine--it’s made for some pretty damn good horror movies.
