Chic - Le Freak (Atlantic Records 1978)
"Le Freak" is a song by the band Chic. It was the band's third single and first Billboard Hot 100 and soul music number-one song. Along with the tracks, "I Want Your Love" and "Chic Cheer", "Le Freak" scored number one on the disco charts for seven weeks.
The single has the distinction of being the best selling record ever for Atlantic Records company, and the best-selling single ever for Warner Music Group until it was displaced in 1990 (by Madonna's song "Vogue").
The single achieved sales of 7 million and also scored #7 in the UK singles chart.
Billboard ranked it as the #3 song for 1979. The song was ranked #19 on Billboard magazine's top 100 songs of the first 50 years of the "Hot 100" chart.
Part of the lyrics mention "Stompin' at the Savoy", which is an actual song composed by Edgar Sampson. They also invite the listener to "Come on down to the 54", which is a reference to a popular nightclub at that time.
This song commemorates Studio 54 for its notoriously long customer waiting lines, exclusive clientele, and discourteous doormen. According to guitarist Nile Rodgers, the song was devised during New Year's Eve of 1977, as a result of his and bassist Bernard Edwards' being refused entrance to Studio 54, where they had been invited by Grace Jones, due to her failure to notify the nightclub's staff. He said the lyrics of the refrain were originally "F*** off!" rather than "Freak out!"
Chic is an American band that was organized during 1976 by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards. It is known best for its commercially successful disco songs, including "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" (1977), "Everybody Dance" (1977), "Le Freak" (1978), "I Want Your Love" (1978), "Good Times" (1979), and "My Forbidden Lover" (1979). The group regarded themselves as a rock band for the disco movement "that made good on hippie peace, love and freedom". In October 2014, Chic was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the tenth time.
(Chorus)
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, c'est Chic
Freak out!
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, c'est Chic
Freak out!
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, c'est Chic
Freak out!
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, c'est Chic
Freak out!
Have you heard about the new dance craze?
Listen to us, I'm sure you'll be amazed
Big fun to be had by everyone
It's up to you, it surely can be done
Young and old are doing it, I'm told
Just one try, and you too will be sold
It's called Le Freak! They're doing it night and day
Allow us, we'll show you the way
[Chorus]
All that pressure got you down
Has your head spinning all around
Feel the rhythm, chant the rhyme.
Come on along and have a real good time
Like the days of "Stompin' at Savoy"
Now we freak, oh! what a joy
Just come on down, to the '54
Find a spot out on the floor
[Chorus]
Now Freak!
I said Freak!
Now Freak!
All that pressure got you down
Has your head spinning all around
Feel the rhythm, chant the rhyme
Come on along and have a real good time
Like the days of "Stompin' at Savoy"
Now we freak, oh! what a joy
Just come on down, to the '54
Find a spot out on the floor
[Chorus]
