1. Change is unlocked from the inside
- Prisoners of concentration camps couldn’t step outside open gates
- People who win lotteries live the same lives (just in more luxury)
- Change thinking to change life. No one can open the gates for us.
2. Secondary gains of inaction
-Be in the passenger seat and complain
- Secondary gains of not taking over control: you don’t have to pay attention, make decisions, and take responsibility
3. “Compressed spring” effect
- Discomfort from inaction compresses “motivation spring”. It creates a risk of breaking.
- Listen to yourself and notice early signs of tension to take small steps towards change (e.g. agile sprints)
4. Value of past mistakes
- When we want change we tend to brush off and diminish the value of past experience
- Future is determined by present action based on experienced gained in the past
5. Energy resources
- Energy of the released spring is not enough for sustainable change
- Take care of your body (sleep, nutrition, physical activity) and emotions (therapy, meditation)
- “Result acknowledgments”: record daily accomplishments
6. Role of the relationships
- Tribal behavior is hard-wired
- People around us inspire by showing what’s possible (to overcome limiting beliefs)
- Social support creates a safety net for taking risk
7. Comparing yourself to others
- Don’t compare your 1st attempt with someone else’s 100th attempt
- Love vs. Fear motivation
