Should India Have 2 Time Zones? History of Indian Standard Time(IST) #ist #northeastindia #timezone

India follows a single time zone — Indian Standard Time (IST).
But did you know this wasn’t always the case?

In the 19th century, cities like Bombay and Calcutta had their own local times, with a difference of almost 30 minutes.
After the International Meridian Conference in 1884, the idea of standard time began, and by 1906, India adopted IST based on 82.5°E longitude near Mirzapur.

But the debate isn’t over.

Even today, experts argue that Northeast India should have a separate time zone due to early sunrise and daylight loss.

Countries like the USA and Russia already use multiple time zones.
So should India do the same?
