The Monument to the Immigrant in Woldenberg Park honors those who arrived through this port — Irish, German, Italian, French, and African — all of whom were once feared, hated, and even targeted with violence.

As an immigration lawyer for 20 years, I’ve seen this pattern repeat itself. Immigrants are blamed for problems they did not create. They are called criminals. They are threatened with mass deportation and stripped of their humanity through policy and rhetoric.

But history tells a different story.

The very soul of New Orleans, like the music, the food, and the spirit of celebration comes from the creole of cultures that met here. Immigrants brought their languages, traditions, and resilience. They blended histories into something entirely new. Something distinctly American.
