Major deployment for HMS Prince of Wales as military helicopters land on aircraft carrier

HMS Prince of Wales deploys to lead Carrier Strike Group 2025 from Portsmouth Naval Base, UK. Five military helicopters land on the deck of the aircraft carrier prior to departing, while thousands gather to show their support, wave flags and see off loved ones as they line the deck.

The flagship aircraft carrier has departed on a major deployment as the UK Carrier Strike Group in the Indo-Pacific this year (2025).
The aircraft carrier will join other warships on the deployment, work with allied nations, pass through and visit multiple areas of the Mediterranean Sea, Middle East, Indian and Pacific Oceans - including Japan and Australia.

Three Merlin and two Wildcat helicopters embarked on the aircraft carrier prior to the ship getting underway. The strike group will later be joined by F35 Lightning II multirole fighter jets while out at sea.

Several police boats of the Ministry of Defence Police escorted the military vessel while the channel was closed to marine traffic. Serco tugs helped to guide the aircraft carrier through the historic Portsmouth Harbour.

Many of the crew lined the deck of the warship in a process known by the Royal Navy as 'Procedure Alpha', waving to friends, family and supporters on the quayside. Royal Marines Band Service played music below the Round Tower.

HMS Prince of Wales (R09) is homeported at His Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth. It is one of the two largest ships in the Royal Navy and the second Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier.
