MELODIC MUSE by Andy Timmons
BLUE CONDITION
Over the next few columns, Andy Timmons will demonstrate a variety of strategies he likes to employ when both composing a melody and improvising a solo over a specific chord progression. The approach he takes may be built from blues-influenced phrases, sometimes in combination with targeting chord tones or with a nod toward a modal approach. For each of these examples, he’ll simply improvise over the progression “in the moment” and then step back and see what tools he used in crafting the phrases.
