The song is based on a poem by Evgeny Dolmatovsky (1915-1994), written in 1950. ‘Motherland Hears’ is inspired by the exploits of military pilots, both before, during, and after the war. Dmitry Shostakovich, who was friends with Dolmatovsky, wrote several songs based on his poems, the cantata Song of the Forests.

It served as the call sign of the All-Union Radio for many years, and in the ‘60s it became a kind of anthem of cosmonautics, at the suggestion of Yuri Gagarin. The surviving transcript of his flight records how he sang ‘Motherland hears’, and he himself said after landing. The photos reflect this - all except the last, were taken by me at various times in Moscow, mainly at the Cosmonautics Museum, VDNKh and Red Square.
