How to Create Rig Controls in Maya | Control Curve Placement

In this part of the Vertmode Rigging Series, we begin building animator-friendly controls by creating and placing control curves in Autodesk Maya.

Control curves act as the interface animators use to move and pose characters. Instead of selecting joints directly, clean controls make rigs easier to understand, organize, and animate.

In this tutorial, we focus specifically on placing controls cleanly and logically throughout the character rig.

Topics Covered:
• Creating control curves
• Positioning controls to match joints
• Scaling and organizing controls
• Building readable animator-friendly rigs
• Keeping controls clean and accessible
• Planning for future rig functionality

This lesson continues building the egg character rig and prepares the setup for constraints, IK controls, and animation workflows later in the series.
