How to Count Stitches / Counting Stitches: Crochet Basics

CONFUSION: In the video, I mention not counting the loop ON the hook. This is because the loop on the hook is NOT A STITCH. It is never counted in crochet. The turning chain, although not typically counted when crocheting short stitches such as the single crochet (which is what I'm using in this video) or half double crochet, IS COUNTED if you're using the taller stitches (double crochet, triple crochet, etc.), unless your pattern or preference dictates otherwise.

Crochet has been adapted many times over the years and new solutions and innovative stitches are being added all the time (magic circle, anyone?). Many things differ from one crocheter to the next, so please keep that in mind.

NOTE: The chain row is, technically, not counted as a row at all. It is the chain row. Your first row begins after the chain row.

It has occurred to me that, although I walk through counting stitches in other stitch-related videos, I do not, specifically, address how to count stitches.

I'd like my beginners to fully understand how to count their crochet stitches, regardless of what they're crocheting. I've shown you how to count rows, but not stitches. This will be a very short tutorial, and will fall into the basics of crochet.

Counting stitches is vital to stay on track in crochet. It's much easier to pull out one row than it is to pull out everything so, as a beginner, you should either be counting your stitches as you go, or counting at the end of each crocheted row, to double-check your accuracy. One of the most common mistakes in crochet is missing or adding a stitch within a row.
