Baltimore councilman "Yitzy" Schleifer criticizes juvenile services chief over youth crime response

Concerns remain around repeat juvenile offenders in Baltimore City, especially the specific problem of young people who committed the violent crime being arrested and taken to the Department of Juvenile Services to then be released.

While some council members expressed an interest in meeting with Maryland Department of Juvenile Services Secretary Vincent Schiraldi, Councilman Isaac "Yitzy" Schleifer says he has no interest in meeting with Schiraldi.

"I think he's a little too far out to lunch," Schleifer said. "I'd rather meet with whoever takes over for his position, I would rather meet with the next DJS secretary rather than the current one, who has clearly demonstrated that he's uninterested in making the changes that need to happen in the city."

Schleifer also claims some city officials are ignoring the problem.

"We have directors of agencies and boards who are quite problematic, equally problematic," he said. "It seems it's really difficult to get rid of people who are a problem."
