Rainbow Mountain - NOT what we expected but WORTH THE VISIT?!

Today, we're venturing outside Cusco, Peru to hike the incredible natural phenomenon, Rainbow Mountain at 17k ft. of elevation.

Normally, we live in Mexico but we decided to travel to Cusco, Peru for one week to see what this Peruvian mountain city is all about. During our time there, we decided to make the 3-hour drive to highly-recommended natural wonder, Rainbow Mountain. About 20 years ago, a giant glacier melted, revealing this mountain of 7 colors (montaña de los 7 colores in Spanish). The many bands of color are created by metals in the soil like copper, platinum, iron, and others.

The hike gained about 3,000 vertical feet, but it was the ALTITUDE that really made it tough! We started at about 14,300 ft. of elevation and ended at over 17,000 ft when we stood facing the majestic Montaña de los 7 Colores. Although we were somewhat let down by the vividness of Rainbow Mountain's colors, we couldn't get enough of the breathtaking landscape that surrounded us throughout the hike.
