Beriato Concert Works Series - Grade 4,5 – Duration: 10:30

Performed by The Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force
Conducted by Matty Cilissen
This composition is based on the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625). As an officer, but as a person as well, he was known for his nerve, loyalty and courage, as well as his caring attitude and reliability. The figure Van Obentraut is closely connected to the town of Seelze, where he died a heroic death, and where a monument was erected in his honour. The work consists of four movements in which various aspects of this historical figure are featured • Opening & Hymn for a Hero - A brass fanfare takes us back in time. The heroism of the illustrious general is then expressed in a majestic hymn. • Stromburg Castle - Obentraut’s childhood days in the castle of Stromburg are conveyed with a dance theme in renaissance style. • The Battle of Seelze - In this movement, the dramatic story of Obentraut’s last battle and his death in Seelze are mirrored. • The Legend Continues - The hymn returns in a grand version as a tribute to the courageous general. What is special about this work is the fact that the hymn (Hymn for a Hero) had been made available as an easy version for flexible band. This makes it possible for a youth or beginner band to play along with a band of adults or advanced players. The hymn can also be played as a separate piece.
A Hero’s Tale was commissioned by the Jugendblasorchester Seelze for the Modern Sound[s] Orchestra, YoungStars, Jbo-Beginners, and the Obentrautstadt Seelze.
