Protests in Chinese Society
This lecture looks at Protests in Chinese Society while answering these questions: What is the role of protest in a democratic society? What is the role of protest in a non-democratic society? What is the relationship between protest and the rule of law? The significant protests in Chinese history that will be examined include 1) May 4, 1919 (May Fourth protest against the post-WWI Paris Peace Conference), (2) b. June 4, 1989 (Tiananmen protest against corruption and authoritarianism in the
Communist Party); 2) June 4, 1989 (Tiananmen protest against corruption and authoritarianism in the Communist Party); and 3) March 15, 2019 (Hong Kong protests against China’s extradition treaty). Protests and the Chinese State will be briefly discussed as well as other questions to consider.
