La Plata Peak is Colorado's 5th tallest 14er as well as our country's 20th highest peak. It is a part of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness and is a neighbor to Colorado's tallest 14er, Mt. Elbert. Today, we took the standard route up La Plata and we were met with extreme winds up above 13,000 ft. The Sawatch range is one of the most beautiful in my opinion and the summit of La Plata does not disappoint.

This week's Hiking in Colorado 14er adventure takes us up the Northwest Ridge of La Plata. The route begins at the La Plata Peak Trailhead and is approximately 9.25 miles round trip with 4,500' of elevation gain. The road to the trailhead was paved and clear. Be sure to check the weather before heading out.
