REAL Grade 9 GCSE Photography Exam Portfolio- Title 'Erased'
Take a full walkthrough of this incredible Grade 9 GCSE Photography project exploring the theme Erased.
Throughout the project, the student experiments with surreal portraiture, long shutter speed photography, image manipulation, distortion, weaving, cropping, obscuring facial features, and physical destruction of photographs to communicate powerful emotional ideas. The work develops through thoughtful experimentation and strong conceptual links, showing genuine refinement and progression across every shoot and edit.
The project is heavily inspired by photographer Edward Honaker, whose surreal self-portraits about anxiety and depression influence much of the visual style and emotional direction of the work. The student carefully analyses Honaker’s use of monochrome imagery, distortion, obscured identity, shallow depth of field, movement, and symbolism before applying these ideas in highly creative and original ways within their own outcomes. Other visual references and conceptual inspirations connected to memory, deterioration, and erasure are also explored throughout the sketchbook.
What makes this such a strong Grade 9 project is the depth of thought behind every decision. The photography is technically confident, but more importantly, every edit, composition, lighting choice, and experimental process clearly links back to the core concept. The annotations are analytical and reflective, showing excellent understanding of both the artists and the creative process. There is also constant experimentation and refinement, which is essential for top GCSE grades.
This video is perfect for GCSE Photography students, teachers, and anyone looking for inspiration on how to push a photography project beyond simple images into something conceptual, emotional, and highly personal.
