Mom & Dad Bed

My parents have been married for almost 61 years. They bought our family camp in 1967. Over the last several years they have struggled with a variety of illnesses from Parkinson's, Diabetes, Alzheimer's and the depression and anxiety inherent in those illnesses.

They can't take care of themselves anymore and they are currently living in separate facilities getting to see each other once or twice a week.

Fortunately my sisters and I are very close and work together to coordinate their care and visits. The lion's share of the care goes to my sister Lynn because of her proximity. My sister Lorna takes care of the finances and is also able to visit my parents more often than me. They have both been amazing.

I took vacation this week and on Wednesday I met Lynn and brought my mom to camp. We had a wonderful day and suddenly all her normal aches and pains disappeared.

The next day my sister Lorna brought dad. He cried with joy getting out of the car and gave my mom a big, shaky kiss.

That night after getting them to bed on the camp porch that they first started sleeping on 46 years ago I got my camera and videotaped this quick little interview.

To me this captures the love, humor, attraction and strength that has sustained and carried them through the last 61 years.
